Crews Get the Snowball Rolling at Camelback Mountain Resort
CAMELBACK SKI RESORT -- It's still fall but it's looking more like winter at some of the ski resorts in our area.
Camelback Mountain Resort near Tannersville is one of the resorts that started making snow Friday morning and Camelback plans to continue it throughout the weekend.
Managers at Camelback say is actually early for them to start making snow but because it's going to continue to be cold throughout the weekend, they couldn't pass up the opportunity.
The leaves on trees are still showing signs of fall but the snow tubing hill at Camelback is starting to look more like a winter wonderland.
Julia Beynon from New Jersey saw the snow guns blasting white powder from the interstate.
"Very excited, especially after last winter. It didn't end on a high but this winter we are thinking with the … La Nina coming through, that we will have a good cold winter with a lot of snow," Beynon said.
Managers at the mountain say this is a little early for crews to start running the guns, but with cold temperatures all weekend long, they couldn't pass up the opportunity to get this snowball rolling.
"We've installed new guns, updated different parts of our system, and it really allows us that when temperatures drop like they just did, to be ready to hit the ground running," said Camelback's Dru Brooks.
Snow guns are going to keep going until Sunday morning and as long as Mother Nature cooperates, the plan is to get this mountain open as soon as possible.
Right now, crews are focusing on covering the snow tubing section because it's easier to maintain in case it gets warmer.
"It would get kind of lost if we did it on the mountain, so we can really focus here on a small condensed area so we can make a difference that will hold up through the warm spell we are going to get in the next couple of days and be able to go as a good base layer we can build on for the rest of the season," Brooks explained.
At The Loft, a ski shop in Pocono Township, workers are already flooded with customers anxious to get ski and snowboarding season started.
"A lot of people will start coming in to get their rentals, boards waxed, or skis done which is awesome because people want to get that done so they can go right up," said Courtney Fish, The Loft.
Camelback's managers say as long as it stays cold and they can make snow, the snow tubing area could be open as early as Thanksgiving.
The resort is hosting a season kick-off party Saturday night where apparently people dance around to the god of snow, so, who knows? Maybe that will help jump-start the season soon.
Montage Mountain in Scranton and other ski resorts in the area also began making snow Friday.
Resorts in the Poconos Busy for Thanksgiving
POCONO TOWNSHIP -- The line in the lobby of Great Wolf Lodge kept growing Wednesday as early check-ins filled the resort in Pocono Township.
One crew came from Maryland for a little "Turkey Day" vacation.
"Well, we came here before, so it was easy for us to make a decision on where we wanted to go," said Chris McQuereerir, Maryland.
"It's good. I really like it here. It's so much fun here, and the food is awesome," said Regygan McQuereerir, Maryland.
Managers tell Newswatch 16 the resort is booked through Monday.
Thousands of people are expected to fill the lodge, and of course, the indoor water park.
"A very busy holiday week and we are excited, not only with Thanksgiving and almost 1,000 reservations, but we also have something that is called Snow Land. This place turns into a winter wonderland at Thanksgiving and it continues," said Bill Colavito, Great Wolf Lodge.
For people who like a quieter setting, Shawnee Inn is where it's at. In fact, the place is nearly booked and they are feeding hundreds of people on Thanksgiving Day.
Chefs inside the kitchen at the resort near Delaware Water Gap are getting ready to feed more than 600 people.
"We start our preparation and inventory about a week and a half, 10 days out. Bringing inventory in, stocking and planning what we need. Monday morning we started most of our preparation," said Chef Dean Gardner, Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
And it takes quite a bit of preparing to accommodate guests outside of the kitchen, too.
"We have staff from everywhere, kitchen, banquette, serving staff everyone is bringing in their own hands and working really hard to make this an awesome holiday for everyone," said Alyssa Fama, Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
Managers at both Shawnee and Great Wolf resorts advise people without reservations to call ahead and check availability before stopping by.
Power To Save: Recycling Holiday Boxes
POCONO TOWNSHIP -- With Cyber Monday come and gone, plenty of Amazon, FedEx, and other boxes will soon be piling up on porches.
Many of those boxes will end up at recycling sites, such as one near Tannersville.
"A lot of people like shopping on their computers and everything, therefore, there's going to be more boxes than usual," said Otis Brooks, Pocono Township.
The Monroe County Waste Authority says this is the time of year when cardboard piles build up -- way up.
There are a few things you should know before tossing it.
"With your cardboard, if it's corrugated, you can bring them to any of our free drop-off facilities. If it's not corrugated and we are talking about gift boxes themselves, you would enter that into mixed paper bins," said Capt. Jacqueline Bagu, Monroe County Waste Authority.
Waste Authority officials tell Newswatch 16, as we get closer to the holidays, there is going to be a lot more cardboard at recycling sites. They want to remind people to break down the box before putting it in the bin.
"If you can enter it into the bin without breaking it down, then by all means. But with the corrugated, it's usually larger boxes so please do flatten them," said Capt. Bagu.
Charles Klippel from Reeders says with the growing popularity of online shopping, he's not surprised to already see boxes piling up.
"I order stuff online myself and then I break them down and bring them here to recycling," said Charles Klippel, Reeders.
Officials say that after the holidays, they expect to see plenty of wrapping paper filling these bins.
